The Weekend Debate: Where’s My Hoverboard?

Following this morning’s reports from Cern that subatomic particles called neutrinos have broken the speed of light, this weekend’s debate focuses on the fascinating world of science or, more specifically, science fiction.
Science fiction has provided fertile ground for video game creators over the years, influencing storytelling and design. All the way back to Spacewar! in 1961 people have been playing depictions of alien invasions and intergalactic conflicts. Racing to the modern day, we’ve seen genetic cloning and nuclear mecha in the Metal Gear Solid Series; body modifications, as seen in Deus Ex; the rise of a sport based on the development of anti-gravity vehicles in WipEout; a man that can heal bullet wounds by leaning against walls in The Getaway; and much, much more.
My question to you is:
Which fictional scientific or technological discoveries in games do you think will become reality? Or, can you explain an example of it already happening?
It’s a tough one this week so grow a beard and get stroking. The prize is worth it though: I’ve got 15 voucher codes for the beautiful PSN god game From Dust, courtesy of Ubisoft. As usual, the 15 most interesting comments will be chosen by our independent judge and the vouchers will be sent via private message at http://community.eu.playstation.com on Monday.
Best of luck!
